It seems that most of the new contractors don’t get their first job for inappropriate cover letter and bidding strategy. Are you troubling to apply a job at oDesk? Are you bored to getting decline message from client. Don’t worry only follow my instruction step by step and to get your first job.
Your price: Don’t bid too much high for any job if you are a new contractors. Always keep it reasonable price. Remember first you have to get some good feedback from the buyers rather than money. So you should always put the lowest bid to increase the chance to get the job.If the budget is 10$ for the project then bid 1-2$ for the job. Don’t bid more than 5$ because there will bid so many contractors lower than 5$ who’s have a great feedback. So why should employer hire you to reject that contractor who bid less than 5$ and have a great feedback.
Upfront: Don’t put any upfront payment if the employer has a great feed back and if he/she spent more $. If the employer is new and have a verified payment method then put 5-10% upfront if the budget is more than 10$. Otherwise don’t put any upfront payment. If the employer is new and have a verified payment method then see his profile that since how job he has posted and how many contractors he has hired. If he posted more than 10 jobs and don’t hire anyone then don’t put bid without upfront payment.
See the screenshot, here the employer already spent more than 50000$. So you should not put any milestone payment on his job if the budget is more than 100$ because he has no headache to cheat with you for simple 100$.It is nothing for him where he spent already more than 50000$.

Cover letter: Cover letter is the main factor to get the job quickly. Most of the new contractors get confused that how he/she write a good cover letter to increase for getting hired. Follow the steps if you troubling to write a good cover letter.1. Always show your good personality to the client. Show him that you are a creative, humorous, hard worker.
2. Read carefully the job details and always mention the details about the job description in your cover letter. It makes the client easy when he will understand that you have spent time to read the job carefully.
3. If you have any question to understand the job details then feel free to ask question to the client in your cover letter.
4. If you have a sample of the past work you have done then submit it with your cover letter.
5. Never fail to mention that you are always reach at any messenger service like skype, gtalk, yahoo messenger. Don’t mention your messenger ID. Its violets the oDesk terms and policy.
6. Don’t copy paste the same cover letter in different jobs. I am saying again that don’t copy paste the same cover letter in different jobs. It is highly violets the oDesk terms and policy. It is considered as spam or recycled cover letter and have a risk to suspend your account. Always read the job description and write cover letter with the demand of the client.
